I distinctly remember studying "The Hunters in the Snow" in high school. However, I never took any art classes (none offered at my school).

I seem to recall a short story or poem that is usually associated with this painting. Any idea what this might be?

There's a poem by William Carlos Williams called "The Hunter in the Snow", which makes reference to the painting. I was unfamiliar with it until now:
